FIVE KEYS TO A HEALTHY GOD RELATIONSHIP (Part 2) Rev Mike Crockett

Session 2: TRUSTING HIM

“Can I trust God when I don’t understand?”

Last week we began with Knowing God. But knowing someone is only the beginning of a relationship. As the relationship grows, something else becomes essential: trust.

We can know a great deal about God and still struggle to trust Him.

Perhaps you have experienced this. You pray about something that matters deeply to you, but nothing seems to happen. You ask God for healing, but the illness remains. You ask for direction, but the way ahead is unclear. You ask, “Why, Lord?”—and sometimes there seems to be no answer.

It is precisely in those moments that trust becomes real.

Proverbs 3:5–6 gives us these familiar words:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

That last phrase is important: “lean not on your own understanding.”

God does not ask us to understand everything. He asks us to trust Him even when we don’t.

Trust is not pretending that everything is all right. It is not denying our fears or difficulties. Biblical trust is saying, “Lord, I don’t understand what is happening, but I believe that You are with me, and I choose to place myself in Your hands.”

Think of a child holding a parent’s hand while walking through a dark place. The child may not know where they are going, but they know who is holding their hand.

That is faith.

Sometimes we think faith means having all the answers. Perhaps faith is actually being willing to continue walking when we don’t have them.

The beautiful thing is that God’s character does not change when our circumstances change.

When life is good, God is good. When life is painful, God is still good. When prayers are answered, God is good.. When prayers seem unanswered, God is still good..

Our circumstances may change dramatically, but God’s faithfulness does not.

Psalm 23 gives us a wonderful picture. David says, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

Notice that God doesn’t necessarily promise to remove the valley. He promises His presence with us in the valley.

Perhaps that is the word someone needs to hear today.

You may not understand what God is doing. You may not know what tomorrow holds. But you can know who holds tomorrow.

So this week, when anxiety comes, try changing the question.

Instead of constantly asking, “How am I going to get through this?”

Ask: “God, can I trust You to walk through this with me?”

Knowing God leads us to trust God and when we learn to trust Him, we discover something beautiful:

We don’t need to know what lies ahead when we know the One who goes ahead of us.

With love and Peace. Mike Crockett.
