FIVE KEYS TO A HEALTHY GOD RELATIONSHIP (Part 5) Rev Mike Crockett

Knowing God by Being With God

Knowing God is not merely an intellectual pursuit or a theological exercise. It is a lived relationship, shaped and deepened through the simple, sacred act of being with Him. Just as friendships grow through shared presence, and love matures through time spent together, so our knowledge of God expands when we intentionally dwell in His company.

In Scripture, God consistently reveals Himself as a God who desires to be with His people. From walking with Adam in the cool of the day, to dwelling among Israel in the tabernacle, to Jesus taking on flesh and living among us, the story of the Bible is the story of divine presence. God does not hide behind clouds of mystery; He invites us into communion. And it is in that communion that true knowledge of Him is formed.

Being with God begins in stillness. In a world of noise, hurry, and distraction, stillness becomes an act of resistance. When we quiet our minds and open our hearts, we create space for God to speak. This is not passive silence but attentive presence—like Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet, choosing the “better part” by simply being near Him. In stillness, we learn to recognize His voice, His peace, and His gentle nudges.

Prayer is another way we are with God. Not prayer as a list of requests, but prayer as conversation. Prayer as listening. Prayer as resting. When we pray in this way, we discover that God is not distant or indifferent; He is near, responsive, and deeply relational. Over time, prayer becomes less about words and more about awareness—an ongoing openness to God’s presence throughout the day.

We are also with God through Scripture. The Bible is not just a book to study; it is a place to meet Him. When we read slowly, prayerfully, and expectantly, the Spirit uses the Word to reveal God’s character, His heart, and His ways. Scripture becomes a living encounter, shaping our understanding not through abstract ideas but through personal revelation.

Finally, being with God happens in obedience. When we follow His leading, even in small things, we experience His faithfulness firsthand. Obedience turns knowledge into experience, and experience into trust. The more we walk with God, the more we know Him—not as a concept, but as a companion.

In the end, knowing God is the fruit of being with God. It is relational, experiential, and deeply personal. When we make space for His presence, we discover that He has been waiting for us all along.

With much love and appreciation, Mike.
