“A Christian’s freedom from anxiety is not due to some guaranteed freedom from trouble, but to the folly of worry and especially to the confidence that God is our Father, that even permitted suffering is within the orbit of His care.” (John Stott)
While so much in our modern life has made our life easier, there is equally much that causes us great stress and anxiety. We get anxious about aging, our children, finances and dread diseases. Sometimes these anxieties become too much, and for some, this can result in a breakdown and in the worst-case scenario, suicide.
Statistics reveal just how dire South Africa’s mental health problem is: It is estimated that approximately 30% of South Africans suffer from some form of mental disorder, according to a SASH (SA Stress and Health) study. This includes those suffering from stress and anxiety.
We need to hold on to the words of the Psalmists, Jesus and the Apostles regarding seeking comfort in God and Jesus: “He leads me beside still waters” Psalm 23; “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matt 11 28-30 MSG; “cast your anxieties on Him because he cares for you” 1 Peter 5:7.
Please pray for:
- The people who suffer anxiety for whatever reason, that they may know and feel the presence of Jesus beside them.
- The people suffering from depression, that their burdens may be lifted from their minds.
- The people suffering from mental illnesses, such as PTSD, Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder and more
- The psychiatrists and psychologists who treat the disorders, that their understanding and treatment options may be enhanced
- The aged, suffering from senility and Alzheimer’s disease
- The families of those who suffer from these disorders
- Ministers and others who bring God’s peace and comfort to sufferers and their families and friends.
