When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer – Corrie Ten Boom
Most of us at some stage of our lives have suffered, or are at present suffering, from depression. It is debilitating condition, that affects how we feel, think and act. It’s more than going through a rough patch – it’s a mood disorder, deep emotional distress.
Several biblical figures suffered from it: Elijah (“I’ve had enough, Lord, take my life.” 1 Kings 19:4), David (“Why, my soul, are you downcast?” (Ps 42:5) and Job (“Why did I not perish at birth?” Job 3:11). Public figures such as Churchill, Actor Robin Williams and Princess Diana all suffered from depression.
God is not shocked by our depressive state. He meets us in our tears with tenderness and love. In Psalm 34:18, we read, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
