PRAYER GUIDE Week 28 July 2025

“Whatever good I may have done is because God saw fit to reach into the depths of Watergate and convert a broken sinner.”   Chuck Colson

Chuck Colson was a Special Advisor to President Nixon at the time of the Watergate scandal. Nixon used him as a hatchet man in his attempts to evade blame for the break-in at the Democrat offices. He was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the scandal.  Before going there, he became a Christian. While in prison, he was challenged by one of the inmates not to forget them when he was released. Once out, he was led to form Prison Fellowship, with the goal of giving hope to prisoners. read more…

PRAYER GUIDE Week 21 July 2025

“True prayer is neither a mere mental exercise nor a vocal performance. It is far deeper than that – it is spiritual transaction with the Creator of Heaven and Earth.” – Charles Spurgeon

A few years ago, Capetonians were watching our dams run dry. Today, praise God, our dams are full and some are overflowing. We have learnt the worth of lifegiving water, and even now, many of us still collect our shower water for reuse. We still have some restrictions on garden watering and many people have chosen the route of waterwise gardening. read more…

PRAYER GUIDE – Week 30 June

When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer  – Corrie Ten Boom

Most of us at some stage of our lives have suffered, or are at present suffering, from depression. It is debilitating condition, that affects how we feel, think and act. It’s more than going through a rough patch – it’s a mood disorder, deep emotional distress.

Several biblical figures suffered from it: Elijah (“I’ve had enough, Lord, take my life.” 1 Kings 19:4), David (“Why, my soul, are you downcast?” (Ps 42:5) and Job (“Why did I not perish at birth?” Job 3:11). Public figures such as  Churchill, Actor Robin Williams and Princess Diana all suffered from depression.  read more…

PRAYER GUIDE – Week 23 June

“Prayer is the most important activity of your life. It is the main way in which you develop a relationship with your Father in heaven. If you love someone, naturally you will want to spend time in their presence communicating with them. Like any relationship, communication can take many different forms.” (Nicky Gumbel)

Lancelot Andrewes (1555–1626), was one of the great theologians and preachers of his day. After he died, his private notebook on prayer was discovered and published. In it he had written two lists: read more…

PRAYER GUIDE – Week 16 June

“Suffer the little children to come unto Me.”  Jesus

On 16 June 1976, the schoolchildren in Soweto started a march to the police station carrying a petition that demanded that they be taught in their own language and not have Afrikaans forced on them. Some of the placards carried by the children, said “Please don’t shoot, we are peaceful”. No one knows what the spark was, but the police, frightened by the body of children started shooting indiscriminately. read more…

PRAYER GUIDE – Week 9 June

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Billy Graham

Next Sunday, we will be celebrating Fathers’ Day, honouring all the fathers for the role they play in bringing up their children in such a way, that they learn independence, responsibility, the role of a man in a Christian family and mot of all, respect for all the women in their lives. Rick Johnson, in “The Power of Fathers” wrote, “As fathers, we have the power to impact generations of lives. Make sure your impact on the twenty-first century is a positive one.” Mary Fairchild wrote, “Most fathers don’t realize the extent of their influence and how their godly behaviour can make a lasting impression on their children.” read more…

PRAYER GUIDE – Week 2 June

“We never know how God will answer our prayers, but we can expect that He will get us involved in His plan for the answer. If we are true intercessors, we must be ready to take part in God’s work on behalf of the people for whom we pray.” Anon

“Intercession is the truly universal work for the Christian. No place is closed to intercessory prayer: no continent, no nation, no city, no organization, no office. No power on earth can keep intercession out.” Richard Halverson

The role of mediator in prayer was prevalent in the Old Testament, in the cases of Abraham, Moses, David, Samuel, Hezekiah, Elijah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. Christ is pictured in the New Testament as the ultimate intercessor, and because of this, all Christian prayer becomes intercession since it is offered to God through and by Christ. Jesus closed the gap between us and God when He died on the cross. Because of Jesus’ mediation, we can now intercede in prayer on behalf of other Christians or for the lost, asking God to grant their requests according to His will. “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). “Who is it that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us”. (Romans 8:34). read more…
