THE MIND OF CHRIST (5) – Rev Mike Crockett

The Mind of Christ Seeks the Father’s Will (John 5:30)

By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.” – John 5:30 (NIV)

To understand the mind of Christ, we must see how deeply it was anchored in the will of the Father. Again and again in the Gospels, Jesus makes it clear: He does nothing on His own. His life is not driven by personal ambition or even human wisdom. Instead, He lives in continual dependence on God.

This is not passive fatalism, but active obedience. Jesus listens, discerns, and responds—not to the noise of public opinion or the demands of the crowd, but to the quiet voice of the Father. His inner compass is unwavering: “I seek not to please myself, but Him who sent me.”

This posture is radical in a culture that prizes autonomy. We are taught from a young age to be self-reliant, to chart our own course, to live “my truth.” But the mind of Christ is fundamentally different. It is not centred on the self, but on the Father’s heart.

To seek the Father’s will is not simply to obey a list of rules—it is to cultivate intimacy. Jesus spent hours in solitary prayer, not to escape people, but to align Himself with the Father’s direction. In those quiet moments, He found clarity, courage, and peace.

So what does this mean for us?

It means learning to ask not just, “What do I want to do?” but “Father, what are You calling me to do?” It means developing a prayerful attentiveness to the Spirit’s nudges, even when they lead us in unexpected directions.

Sometimes the Father’s will takes us into challenge or discomfort—into forgiving an enemy, staying when we want to leave, or speaking truth when silence would be easier. Jesus faced all of that. Yet in every moment, His mind remained fixed: Not my will, but Yours be done.

We can imitate this mindset in small ways. Begin each day with a simple offering: “Father, show me Your will today.” Pause in moments of decision to pray: “What would please You here?” Over time, this becomes more than a practice—it becomes our orientation, our joy, our peace.

The mind of Christ does not seek to control life, but to align with the One who holds it in His hands.
