PRAYER GUIDE – Week 16 June
“Suffer the little children to come unto Me.” Jesus
On 16 June 1976, the schoolchildren in Soweto started a march to the police station carrying a petition that demanded that they be taught in their own language and not have Afrikaans forced on them. Some of the placards carried by the children, said “Please don’t shoot, we are peaceful”. No one knows what the spark was, but the police, frightened by the body of children started shooting indiscriminately. It is estimated that about 176 students died in the uprising, one of the first was Hector Pieterson. We have all seen Sam Nzima’s picture of him being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubu and his sister Antoinette next to them. Before 1994, June 16 was known unofficially as Soweto Day, and with the new constitution became Youth Day. It is a day to remember our youth and those around the world.
Sadly, many children are kidnapped, sold into sex slavery, used as child labour, forced into child marriages or used as child soldiers.
In your prayers this week,
- Bring before God children under all forms of oppression, bondage and violence, in particular……
- Pray for those taken into bondage, for the children forced to be sex slaves.
- Pray for the parents and loved ones of those who have disappeared, never to be heard from again.
- Pray for the children forced to labour, toiling in the harshest of conditions.
- Pray for child brides, forced into marriages by their parents or as kidnap victims.
- Pray for all who are working toward the freedom of children enslaved by others, for strength to continue with the work and for success in their endeavours.

PRAYER GUIDE – Week 9 June
“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Billy Graham
Next Sunday, we will be celebrating Fathers’ Day, honouring all the fathers for the role they play in bringing up their children in such a way, that they learn independence, responsibility, the role of a man in a Christian family and mot of all, respect for all the women in their lives. Rick Johnson, in “The Power of Fathers” wrote, “As fathers, we have the power to impact generations of lives. Make sure your impact on the twenty-first century is a positive one.” Mary Fairchild wrote, “Most fathers don’t realize the extent of their influence and how their godly behaviour can make a lasting impression on their children.”
As men, we can look to the example of strong fathers in the Bible. Think of Abraham, the father of faith in God, prepared to sacrifice his own son; Job, who prayed for his children: Jacob, AKA Israel, left his children a blessing; Joseph, in obedience to God’s calling was an earthly Stepfather to Jesus, and taught him a trade. But most of all, we can look to God as our Heavenly Father: “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
In your prayers this week, please remember fathers everywhere, as they handle the responsibility of bringing up their children, imparting their faith, principles, and respect for others, especially their wives and partners.

THE MIND OF CHRIST (3) – Rev Mike Crockett
“When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.” – Mark 6:34 (NIV) The question to ask is not whether it is realistic or practical or viable but whether it is imaginable. We need to ask if our consciousness and imagination have been so assaulted and co-opted by the prevailing consciousness that we have been robbed of the courage or...
